The New York State Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) Utica Regional Office is seeking an undergraduate student for a paid summer opportunity. The Utica Regional Office represents the State, its agencies and officers in a wide range of state court litigation, including claims, writs, Article 78s, and mental hygiene cases. Candidates should have excellent verbal and written communication skills. They should not be afraid to ask questions when seeking directions or guidance on cases and must be able to receive instruction and constructive feedback well. Candidates should be dependable, prompt and have a team/customer–focused approach to providing support and completing assignments. Finally, candidates who are available to begin working during the spring semester and continue into the summer are preferred.

Duties would include, but not limited to the following:
  • Maintaining consumer complaint database and performing searches for repeat complaints on businesses;
  • Identifying, processing, reviewing and responding to consumer complaints, as well as working on mediation when appropriate;
  • Answering the main phone line, transferring calls and taking messages;
  • Managing files/records, including scanning, copying, sorting and data entry;
  • Filing documents at the county clerk’s office and the county and supreme courts;
  • Supporting monthly public outreach/education events;
  • Ensuring sufficient inventory of public information pamphlets/brochures;
  • Providing staffing OAG information table at various community events such as the NYS Fair;
  • Conducting research and generating reports; and
  • Attending training sessions (possibly) in the Syracuse or Albany office.

Position Details
  • Undergraduates in their first year should wait to submit their applications until after they have received their first semester grades.
  • The OAG’s summer program will officially run from June 1 – July 24, 2020. The student hired for this position will work 30 hours/week for the 8 weeks of the program.
  • The selected candidate will be hired as a student assistant at the hourly rate of $13.86 for undergraduate students.
  • Applications will be accepted online and positions will be filled on a rolling basis.
  • Applicants must be available to meet in person or by video conference for interviews.
  • Applicants must be eligible to be employed in the U.S.
  • To be eligible, applicants must be full-time undergraduate students in good academic standing as defined by their schools.
