The Urban Scholars application process for other program partners; City of Minneapolis, Fourth Judicial District Courts, Greater Twin Cities United Way, Metropolitan Airports Commission, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, and the State of Minnesota is a separate process and can be found here.

The following are required attachments. You will not be able to submit your application without attaching them. If you do not attach the required documents, your application will be considered incomplete
  • Resume (including education and relevant course work, skills, languages spoken, internship and volunteer experience, work history, and accomplishments [i.e. honors, awards, etc.])
  • Unofficial transcript labeled with your student information (i.e. name, major, etc.)
  • Essay Questions: In a 1-2 page, 1.5 spaced essay, describe how you have exhibited each of the below qualifications in your personal, academic, or professional journey. Do not exceed two pages, as we will not review beyond the second page. This is not a cover letter. Please answer each essay question in a separate paragraph. The completed essay must be uploaded under the attachment type "Other" in the online application.
  • Cultural Competency: The ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with persons from cultures and/or belief systems other than one's own.
  • Altruism: Cares about other people and their needs without regard for their own needs and thinks about other groups who have a stake or interest in various projects, initiatives, or activities.
  • Teamwork/Collaboration: Takes a broad view of the team concept and considers values, opinions, and preferences of other group members in completing tasks and in decision making.
  • Resiliency/Adaptability: Shows resiliency in the face of obstacles, setbacks and other sources of stress; gets back up and moves forward. Adapts well to changing conditions and recognizes when changes in priorities, direction, or the pace of activities appear necessary.

A list of each internship and short descriptions of each intern project can be found here. This list will be updated as more projects become available. Once you have been selected into the Urban Scholars Program you will receive a complete list of the projects and will receive an opportunity to rank and select your top placement choices.

Requirements to be considered for the Urban Scholars program:
  • Current enrollment as an undergraduate student in good standing at a two or four year college or university; or a recent graduate with a degree conferred between December 2019 and May 2020.
  • Must have completed first year of post-secondary education.
  • Must be prepared to participate on a full-time basis (40 hours per week) for 13 weeks from May 19th until August 14th.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
The required attachments: resume, unofficial transcript, and essay (not cover letter) will be used in the selection process. Your application will be considered incomplete and may not be considered if you do not submit all three of the required documents.

The selection process into Urban Scholars is based on if an applicant embodies the core competencies of cultural competency, altruism, teamwork/collaboration, and resiliency/adaptability. An applicant is then matched with one of the internship descriptions provided by hiring managers based on need and the applicant's preference. Our goal is to ensure a meaningful work experience, so an applicant may be a great fit for the program, but if there is not a project that will benefit the applicant a placement will not be made.

Some departments may require a background check as part of their hiring process.
