HHS Public Health and Health Policy Fellowship

A research opportunity is currently available in the Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP), within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) located in Washington, DC.

Under the guidance of OIDP's Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives, the participant will be involved in the development and implementation of several national strategic plans and initiatives currently underway within OIDP; these plans and initiatives pertain to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), viral hepatitis, HIV, and other infectious diseases. The participant will learn from and collaborate regularly with a national strategies team responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring national strategic plans and initiatives to prevent the spread of and eliminate certain infectious diseases in the U.S. The participant will have the opportunity to be closely involved with the team, other federal agencies, and governmental and non-governmental stakeholders developing and implementing the first-ever federal action plan to address the STI epidemic in the U.S. The participant will also have the opportunity to conduct qualitative and quantitative research and analysis related to these national strategic plans, including developing recommendations to address barriers to improving prevention and health outcomes. Finally, the participant will also have the opportunity to take part in and recommend development of other initiatives to prevent and reduce STIs, and prevent and eliminate viral hepatitis and HIV, as well as initiatives involving OIDP’s vaccines and immunizations, and blood and tissue safety and availability portfolios.     

Under the guidance of the mentor, the participant may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:
  • Contributing to activities related to the development and implementation of federal and national strategic plans, including the first-ever STI Federal Action Plan, the next National Viral Hepatitis Strategic Plan, and the next National HIV Strategic Plan
  • Conducting qualitative and quantitative research and analysis related to federal and national strategic plans, including developing recommendations to address barriers to improving prevention and health outcomes
  • Participating in initiatives to prevent and reduce STIs, and prevent and eliminate viral hepatitis and HIV
  • Conducting research on topics related to STIs, viral hepatitis, HIV and other infectious diseases
  • Identifying and contributing to the development of policy and program needs and new initiatives related to STIs, viral hepatitis, HIV and other infectious diseases
  • Contributing to the development of briefing and other communications materials
  • Participating in briefings related to STI, viral hepatitis, HIV and other infectious disease policy issues, including for senior leadership

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:
  • Knowledge and an understanding of STIs, sexual health, viral hepatitis, HIV
  • Background in infectious diseases, behavioral or social sciences, public health policy, or other closely related disciplines
  • Strong planning, research, communication, and writing skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the health care system and public health
