FDA Toxicology Research Fellowship

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

A research opportunity is currently available in the Office of Blood Research and Review (OBRR), at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Restoration of O2 homeostasis is a critical question surrounding the transfusion of processed red blood cells (RBCs). The only medical rationale to transfuse RBCs is to restore tissue oxygenation and pre-clinical model development to test the quality of red blood cell (RBC) preparations defines reasonable risk to patients. This study will test the concept of effective O2 restoration by processed RBCs.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following research areas:
  • Post red blood cell transfusion tissue oxygenation and RBC toxicology in animal models
  • Evaluation of accurate tissue measurement of oxygen post transfusion and
  • Evaluation of methods to mitigate the adverse effects of transfusion induced hemochromatosis

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
