Wildlife Habitat Technician (8 positions)

Idaho Department of Fish & Game is hiring eight Wildlife Habitat Technician positions. These positions will work as part of a team to perform physical and technical duties regarding wildlife habitat management on Market Lake Wildlife Management Area (MKWMA), Deer Parks Wildlife Management Unit (DPWMU), Sand Creek Wildlife Management Area (SCWMA) or Tex Creek Wildlife Management Area (TCWMA). Primary tasks include habitat improvement projects, water management, fence maintenance, conducting wildlife and vegetation surveys, weed spraying, facilities management, conducting public use surveys, and coordinating volunteer projects. These positions will focus primarily on implementing the noxious weed management program. Primary tasks include: plant identification, plant surveys, noxious weed control, using and maintaining ATVs and herbicide spray equipment, exercising proper use and handling of herbicides, GPS/GIS mapping, and coordinating volunteer projects. Opportunities exist to participate in several other aspects of wildlife management.

Location: Upper Snake Region: Market Lake WMA, Roberts, ID; Deer Parks WMU, Menan, ID; Sand Creek WMA St. Anthony, ID; or Tex Creek WMA Ririe, ID.

Duration: 4.5 months, Start dates vary with WMA(March to May), end dates (July to September).

A successful candidate should possess or be willing to obtain a professional pesticide applicators license through Idaho State Department of Agriculture (training will be provided on the job). These are demanding positions that require a positive attitude, and the ability to handle tough physical and mental conditions. Successful applicants will perform, with or without reasonable accommodations, physical and technical duties associated with wildlife habitat management, and engage in informational and educational activities with the public. These positions may require weekend work, physically demanding projects, working in remote landscapes in adverse weather, identifying plant species, the use of herbicides for weed control, use of GIS/GPS systems, safely operating 4WD trucks, tractors, ATV’s, chainsaws, and power planting augers. Experience with these skills are desired but not required. Training will be provided.

Currently, enrolled in an accredited college or university, majoring in biology, wildlife management, recreation, forestry, range management, or a similar natural resources program are encouraged to apply.   B.S. in wildlife related degree preferred. Alternatively, the applicant should have experience from a farm-related or natural resource position along with experience safely handling, operating, and maintaining field equipment. Competitive applicants will have a sound work ethic, ability to collaborate, strong communication skills, and ability to work both independently and as a team member, be a motivated self-starter and have a willingness to learn. Additionally a valid driver's license with a good driving record is required.
