Research Technician IV, Brent Lab

Overview
Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

The Brent lab is seeking a Research Technician IV to support our research in the causes and consequences of non-genetic phenotypic variation.

The project specifically includes design and construction of "controllers", complex artificial systems allowing tunable variation-suppressed expression of genes in mammalian cells. The Research Technician IV will also be involved in efforts to develop Augmented Reality (AR) methods and protocols to aid the controller project, and to in work to learn how to use AR to enable other researchers to better carry out a variety of fundamental experimental manipulations.
Responsibilities
For this position, we are hoping to find an extraordinary and dedicated individual. The lab is a multidisciplinary environment and offers a number of intellectual growth paths by which scientists willing to engage can continue to develop scientifically. This position will support research activities that include but are not limited to:
  • Generation of variation-suppressed expression constructs to control genes in mammalian cells
  • Generation and testing of large numbers of intermediate constructs carrying out subfunctions, en route to assembly and testing of the best expression controllers
  • Facility with contemporary DNA assembly methods including in vitro assembly and relevant construction methodologies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
  • Use of software to plan DNA constructions and ability to quickly use lab and other image cytometric software to quantify gene expression in single mammalian cells
  • Use of flow cytometry and flow cytometric methods
  • Updating of standard molecular cell biology/genetic techniques, including retroviral and lentiviral gene transduction, CRISPR, and next generation sequencing analysis, as methods change, based on input from other scientists, literature
  • Engagement with rapidly developing AR and ancillary technologies to aid research projects, willingness to participate in developmental work that will enable others to benefit from this new medium, and possible help with translation to AR representations
  • Aid conventional training, supervision and evaluation of laboratory staff and students
  • Development and updating of laboratory procedures, drafts of reports and manuscripts and the presentation of data at lab meetings develop and establish published
  • Participation in local and national scientific meetings.
  • Collaboration with PI for the submission of research grants and the submission of progress reports to identify funding and manage projects and research studies
Required:
  • Master's degree or higher in Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell Biology or related areas
  • At least eight years of experience in a related area, or equivalent combination of education/experience, and a strong background in molecular biology, DNA work, and mammalian cell culture, demonstrated facility with contemporary DNA assembly methods
 Preferred:
  • Experience with rigorous genetics in a prokaryotic system, or in the model systems S. cerevisiae, C. elegans, or D. melanogaster
  • At least 10 years of relevant research experience with some combination of genetics, molecular biology, single cell assays, DNA/genomic based analytical methods, and cell culture
