ACE: Collections Management Intern, Cumberland Island National Seashore

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with Cumberland Island National Seashore (CUIS) is seeking ONE Collections Management Intern interested in dedicating 46 weeks in support of the National Park Service. The Collections Management Intern will focus on helping address deficiencies identified in the CUIS Collections Management Plan (CMP) and resolve those issues such that they meet NPS collections' standards. Additional tasks may include treating and stabilizing objects and developing a digital media format that will present collections objects on the CUIS website and/or social media platforms.
This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic individuals who possess an interest in gaining experience in collections management.
 
Start Date: March 2, 2020
End Date:  January 17, 2021 (or 46 weeks after start date)
 
Location: Cumberland Island National Seashore, GA
Cumberland Island National Seashore preserves Cumberland Island, Georgia's largest and southernmost barrier island. The seashore features beaches and dunes, marshes, and freshwater lakes. The national seashore also preserves and interprets many historic sites and structures.

Living Allowance: ACE Intern is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $470/week to cover the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
 
Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the intern and not provided by ACE or NPS.
 
Position Description: The ACE Intern will assist the CUIS Cultural Resources Program Manager. The position will be based in the museum building located on the mainland in St. Marys, Georgia. However, position duties will require recurring work on Cumberland Island itself, which is only accessible by boat.
Throughout the 46 week program the ACE intern may conduct the following:
  • Cataloguing collections pieces in the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS).
  • Updating and organizing accession and catalog records.
  • Stabilize, process, organize, and house recent additions to the archives collection.
  • Implement an environmental monitoring program for storage and exhibit spaces.
  • Photo and written documentation, condition assessments, necessary accessioning, and improving storage conditions for collections pieces stored on the island.
  • Coordinate an effort to ensure sensitive materials are transferred to adequate mainland facilities, while more robust pieces are housed on the island.
  • Perform basic conservation treatments and protection measures with an eye toward making the objects stable and secure, with the potential for placement on exhibit.
  • Analyze and research collection pieces to determine significance and provenience.
  • Develop a digital media feature.
  • Assist with Annual Inventory of Museum Property.
  • Conduct and/or participate in other resource management actions that involve archeology, historic structures, and historic landscapes.
 
Qualifications: 
Required
  • Applicants must have a 4-year degree or certification in Museum Studies, History, Archeology, or a similar degree in cultural resources. A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable.
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. 
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Proven ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • Proficient in English
  • Must be 21-35 years of age (This position's age limitations are a requirement of the Public Land Corps Act. Additionally, members must be 21+ to apply for an ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties.)

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Must be willing and physically able to work in conditions that at times will be hot, humid, and environmentally challenging, and require some physical manual labor for extended periods of time.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with databases
  • Experience in conservation of museum objects
  • Experience working with websites and social media platforms
