Hiking Counselor

During each Mayhew session, each cabin will go on two day-hikes. One up Mts. Welch & Dickey and one up Mt. Cardigan. These outings depart after chore time and return in time to have the group ready for dinner waiter’s call. Hikes are a chance for boys 1) to take their Mayhew behavior off the Island; 2) to appreciate nature; 3) to conquer a new challenge; 4) to learn wilderness skills; and 5) to develop group spirit and identity.

One hiking counselor and one cabin counselor are traditionally assigned to a given day hike. The hiking counselor is responsible for assembling equipment before a hike, for sorting/cleaning/putting it away after the hike, and for leading the group throughout the day.

On hikes, Mayhew tries to encourage the boys to enjoy nature and develop cabin group spirit while practicing a high standard of appropriate trail etiquette (e.g. step to the right to let others pass, respect plants and animals encountered, leave rocks and things where you found them, keep noise to a minimum, Leave No Trace, etc.).

Candidates for this position need to be 21 with a clean driving record. Candidates must also be physically capable of hiking multiple days in a row.
