CDC Environmental Health Policy Fellowship

A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The world around us plays a vital role in our health and wellbeing. From the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the food we eat, we are constantly interacting with our environment. DEHSP works to prevent exposures to environmental health hazards to improve the health of all people in all communities through applied environmental public health science and practice. This opportunity offers the ability to be involved with high-profile, high-impact issues in environmental health policy. Among the division’s many current pressing, high profile environmental public health topics with high potential for policy impact are lead, asthma, climate and health, safe water, and harmful algal blooms.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will have the opportunity to learn about how public health surveillance and research inform public health policy and action. Participant training will involve literature searches, database review, data analysis, and summary and reporting of key findings for various audiences and stakeholders. The participant will receive training in the following areas:
  • Public health policy research and analysis
  • Best practices in environmental public health
  • Practice and application of public health policy to support public health programs
  • Tracking of national and state level legislation
  • Responding to policy and partnership requests
  • Planning and managing logistics to organize meetings or events
  • Preparing talking points and presentations 
Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conceptualize complex problems and identify possible approaches or solutions
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of policy processes
