FDA Consumer Understanding of the Drug Facts Label Fellowship

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

A research opportunity is available in the Office of New Drugs/Office of Drug Evaluation IV, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.

This project intends to examine the Drug Facts Label (DFL) utilized on over-the-counter (OTC) medications to see if improvements could be made to drug labeling to increase consumer understanding. The project will utilize literature review to examine current research into topics such as consumer understanding of drug labeling, health literacy, and the social determinants of health and their impact on consumer ability to self-diagnose and treat medical conditions. If changes are needed in product labelling, this research would help delineate what such changes could be.

Under the guidance of a mentor the participant will be trained on reviewing the relevant literature to identify potential areas for improvement; contributing to the development of questions and topics for discussion in a public workshop on the DFL; and compilation of relevant information that is generated by the public workshop.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:
  • Experience with both qualitative and quantitative behavioral research methods and data analysis
  • Experience conducting literature reviews
  • Previous experience with health focused research (preferably with consumers or patients)
