Salome is a small agricultural community that was once along the major route to California. It lies about 120 miles west of Phoenix on US Route 60.
The legend of Salome has to do with it’s founder Mr. Dick Wick Hall. Officially, It’s Salome, after Mrs. Grace Salome Pratt, wife of Hall’s mining partner. After observing her attempt to walk on the hot desert sand in her bare feet and proceed to “dance” to her destination, he named the town “Salome - where she danced - Arizona.” This was an apparent reference to the biblical “Salome” that danced for her king.
Salome High School came into existence in 1955 with the unique mascot, the “Fighting Frogs” and school colors of green and white. The Frog mascot was appropriately chosen after Salome founder, humorist and famous author, “Dick Wick Hall,” wrote a story about, “The Salome Frog that was 7 years old and couldn’t swim.” The school colors were chosen because, of course, frogs are green. In 1976 Salome High School became its own district, Bicentennial Union High School District No. 76.
Salome High School is the sole member of the Bicentennial Union High School District #76, covering and area of approximately 3,800 square miles and serving students and families from the communities of Aguila, Bouse, Cibola, Ehrenberg, Salome, Quartzsite, Wenden, and Vicksburg. Salome’s small town atmosphere provides a safe and secure setting for students to learn and grow. Salome High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges.
