Position Title: Hand Up Food Pantry Distribution Specialist

Organization:  Jewish Family Service of San Diego

Position Type:  Full-time (37.5 hours), non-exempt (weekdays and an average of 1 Sunday per month)

Pay Rate: $15 - $16 per Hour

Position Overview
Jewish Family Service – Hand Up Food Pantry is seeking a full-time Distribution Specialist. This position is an exciting opportunity to make a difference in the San Diego community by helping to alleviate hunger. Hand Up distributes food at eight county-wide locations and is supported by community food drives and donations. 

Essential Functions:
  • Collaborating with the Food Pantry team in coordinating three community distribution sites (Ohr Shalom Synagogue, Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, and Murphy Canyon military housing)
  • Picking up and transporting food orders.
  • Driving of 3 different vehicles including an 18ft box truck.
  • Loading supplies on truck.
  • Overseeing volunteers at distribution sites.
  • Ensuring food bags are pre-assembled on schedule.
  • Delivering food to each site.
  • Maintaining relationships with staff/volunteers at each site.
  • Managing and engaging volunteers
  • Preparation and ensuring inventory is adequate for volunteers’ tasks to be completed.
  • Supervising volunteers on a daily basis who work on and offsite. 
  • Supervising the Corner Market, ensuring it is well stocked and supported.
  • Consistently communicating with volunteers, being available for guidance and supervision.
·        Coordinates volunteers and drivers for fresh food rescue
  • Coordinating food drives and donations
  • Ensuring ongoing support of annual community food drive including communications, dropping off collection barrels and flyers, and picking up food donations.
  • Soliciting new food drives, including working with teen leadership program participants to run community and neighborhood food drives.
  • Picking up and processing store donations.
  • Ongoing tasks
  • Reporting monthly volunteer statistics.
  • Weekly food orders from food banks.
  • Bi-weekly thank you notes and letters to donors.
  • Maintaining purchase receipts.
  • Weekly supervision.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Position Requirements
·        High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
·        Must be available to work Sundays.
·        Must have a valid CA drivers license, Valid Insurance and a good driving record.
·        Experience supervising and motivating volunteers
·        Excellent spelling, grammar, and written communication skills.
·        Excellent telephone and oral communication skills.
·        Ability to read and interpret documents such as memos, general clerical documents, project and grant reports, safety rules, instruction booklets, and manuals.
·        Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measurement using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
·        Ability to apply common sense and critical thinking to carry out instructions and make decisions within the scope of authority.
·        Ability to deal with problems involving several variables.
·        Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
·        Ability to write clear and concise emails.
