Outdoor Social Studies Instructor

MESD Outdoor School programs are focused on Oregon’s youth becoming active and knowledgeable citizens, teaching the natural wonders and phenomena of Oregon in the out of doors. The Fourth Grade Overnight is in the middle of major program changes. It was designed as an immersive History program to allow elementary aged students to experience a ‘taste of pioneer life.’ A team of consultants is currently examining the program to change the perspective. Our hope is that the focus will center on Geography within an Historical context that includes perspectives from all peoples who contributed to the region. The staff team hired for this program will spend time in March exploring resources to broaden their perspective of these topics and help to shape new conversations and activities for students to experience.

In the Outdoor School programs High school students provide mentorship and community development and are empowered to become teachers themselves, leading hands-on immersive activities in the field. Competent instructional staffs are employed to ensure a rich, 24-hour, living experience where, without interruption, elementary students from the classroom come to the outdoors where they can connect with a place and with each other in a rare way. Staff are responsible for facilitating a fun, inclusive, safe and authentic experience for students. You act as a role model, mentor and community leader as they process and experience their time at the Overnight. We are looking for dedicated, culturally sensitive, patient, student centered team players.
