Program Innovation Spring 2020 Internship

The Program Innovation team at Share Our Strength uses human-centered design to inform and improve organizational strategy and develops strategies to end childhood hunger that meet the needs of families and communities. The Spring 2020 Program Innovation intern will offer research and resource development support for the team in Spring 2020. Likely projects include: synthesizing findings from pilots aimed at improving the WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) shopping and appointment experience, exploring the use of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) funds to support child nutrition efforts, and developing materials to include in a fruit and vegetable voucher pilot that would engage young children in eating fruits and vegetables. 
Duties and Responsibilities
  •  Write a report that summarizes potential uses of TANF funds.
  • Conduct online research and informational interviews in order to assess how various state agencies use TANF funds.
  • Read, synthesize, and organize findings from eight pilots aimed at improving the WIC shopping and appointment experience.
  • Develop materials to share learnings from WIC pilots.
  • Explore availability of existing materials designed to encourage healthy eating among young children.
  • Develop a set of materials designed to engage young children in selecting, preparing, and consuming fruits and vegetables, which would accompany vouchers mailed to families in pilot program.
Required Skills
  •  Bachelor’s degree, or in progress, required. Progress toward an advanced degree (MPP, MPH, MA, Ph.D., etc.) preferred. 
  • Strong analytic and research skills. 
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Self-directed project manager.
  • Excellent facilitation, listening, and communication skills.
  • Work and/or lived experience in low-income communities. Understanding of social issues, especially related to poverty and hunger.
  • Interest or understanding of some of the following areas preferred: federal child nutrition programs, early childhood education, food insecurity, and nutrition education.
  • Work or collaboration with state agencies such as Department of Health or Department of Education preferred.
