FC-FLIP Reforestation Individual Placement

Job Description
Title: FC-FLIP (Four Corners Federal Lands Internship Program) Reforestation Individual Placement
Timeline: May 25 - August 7, 2020
Stipend: $400/week (+Education Award)
Term: 11 weeks
Reports To: United States Forest Service
Location: Bayfield, CO
Status: 300-hour AmeriCorps Service Term
Position Type: Full-Time/Regular
Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,298.95 upon successful completion
Schedule: 40-hour week; occasional long days, weekend, or evening work may be required
Mentor: Gretchen Fitzgerald, Reforestation Forester; San Juan National Forest
Responsibilities:
The intern will assist a team of forestry technicians collecting survival and stocking information in several tree plantations, clearcuts and burned areas. The intern will also participate in the preparation of a reforestation contract for fall of 2018 by laying out and GPS planting units. Additional work will include collecting stand exam data, insect and disease surveys and some timber sale marking. Other opportunities with the Columbine Ranger District resource professionals may be available if time allows. This internship will be physically demanding with long days on foot, in the field, in the wide variety of summer time weather in the San Juan Mountains. Most of the work will be on steep slopes in old wildfire areas at high elevations.

  • Desire to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Strong hiking ability
  • Camping and backpacking skills
  • Some experience and/or course work in basic field survey and monitoring methods
  • Basic map reading skills and GPS knowledge useful
  • Strong background in the sciences and/or natural resources
  • Completion or work towards a degree in forestry, natural resource management, botany, plant physiology, or ecology
  • Knowledge of local tree species is useful
  • Clean driving record for operation of government vehicles
  • A reliable personal vehicle is required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to carry out and accomplish work in a timely manner
  • Ability to be flexible and willingness to jump in to help as needed
  • Per grant funding, candidate must be 18-30 years of age
Training Provided: Orientation will be held in Silverton the week of May 25th and will include: backcountry skills and safety, introduction to federal careers and USAJobs, natural resources and issues in the Four Corners, scientific and professional communications, and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification (interns need to prepare (8 hrs.) prior to arrival on May 25th).
Housing: Housing is available through the Columbine RD outside of Durango on a first come first serve basis: priority is given to FS crews in FS housing.
