Arboriculture and Urban Forestry Summer Internship, Flight 93 National Memorial

The Arboriculture and Urban Forestry Associate (intern) will provide tree care to over 2000 recently planted trees at Flight 93 National Memorial in Western Pennsylvania. While the internship is based in Shanksville, the position will be part of a cohort of Associates based in Boston, Philadelphia and Richmond who will collaborate, and engage in learning opportunities including field trips to other national parks.

As an integral part of the Olmsted Center and Flight 93 National Memorial Team, the Associates will develop a GPS inventory and assessment of existing trees; develop and implement a plan for Integrated Pest Management activities within the memorial tree groves; and execute corrective action for recently planted trees in soils that need modification. A trencher and air spade will be key tools in this effort. The Associates will also be involved in communications and outreach.

Through this opportunity, the Associates will gain experience in both hands-on landscape preservation skills and public park planning, providing them with the opportunity to learn about planning for the preservation and care of nationally significant historic sites. This internship is supported through a partnership with the National Council for Preservation Education.
