Title: Ancestral Lands - Glen Canyon Interpretation Technician
Start/End Date: March 30nd, 2020 – January 8th 2021
Stipend:  $400/week (+Education Award) 
Term:  41 weeks 
Reports To:  National Park Service - Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
Location:  Page, AZ 86040
Status:  1200-hour AmeriCorps Service Term 
Benefits:  AmeriCorps Education Award $4,266.50 after successful completion 
Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission 
It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. The Ancestral Lands program is specifically designed to engage Native American youth and young adults with offices in Acoma, Durango, Gallup, Salida, Zuni, and Hopi. *Ancestral Lands serves local tribal communities in the regions we operate. Applicants must be Native American.
Program Description: 
Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ individual placement team and help the National Park Service carry out its mission of preserving unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations
The primary purpose of this position is to provide guide services to visitors. The work involves giving talks, interpreting natural and historic features, answering questions, guiding tours, and providing miscellaneous service to visitors. Major duties include:
  • Staffing of visitor center or visitor contact station, including open/closing of facility, and light-janitorial duties.
  • Being available to answer in-person and telephone inquiries from the general public.
  • Roving of the recreation areas trails, marinas, and viewpoints to provide appropriate interpretive information and safety messages.
  • Distributing Junior Ranger booklets to age-appropriate visitors, checking the completed booklets, and awarding badges.
  • Assisting in trip planning to park and local areas
  • Aiding park staff and partner agencies with special events in the visitor center and/or park, and assisting with the staffing of information tables for events.
  • May, with experience, lead an established interpretive program or guided hike. Initial interpretive programs will be based on pre-arranged research and topics, but throughout internship, will be expected to create individual and researched programs. 
  • Help maintain the supply of maps and brochures at the visitor center. 
  • Provide First Aid and emergency response at appropriate level of training.
  • Training will be provided in the following:
  • NSC Defensive Driving Course
  • National Park Service Operational Leadership
  • Wilderness First Aid
General Qualifications:  
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Currently seeking or recently completed a bachelor's degree in history, environmental science, ecology, archaeology, or geology (preferred)
  • Passion for connecting Native American communities to their national parks

  • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
  • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
  • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • A departure record ( INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • Driver's License
Limited government housing may be available with this position. It generally consists of a private bedroom with a shared living, kitchen, and bathroom space. Basic furniture, such as beds, dressers, sofas, and tables are provided. Due to the shared nature of the housing, overnight guest will require written permission, and non-service pets will not be permitted.
