Historic Preservation Specialist

Assist National Park Service Cultural Resource Specialists in researching, documenting and assessing the conditions of historic structures in National Parks within the NPS Region 1.


National Park Service, Region 1, Historic Architecture, Conservation, and Engineering Center, Historic Structure Documentation (HSRD) Program: Assists cultural resource specialists with the management of cultural resources with research, field evaluation and updating/recertifying of the region’s Cultural Resources Inventory System – Historic Structures (CRIS-HS) database in fulfillment of Section 110 and in support of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Internship duties include (full-time/40 hours a week):
·        Researching site and National Register of Historic Places documentation;
·        Assessing and interpreting professional analysis of architectural, engineered, and landscape features; compiling, organizing, and entering the information in the CRIS-HS database;
·        Organizing CRIS-HS files for reference purposes; and limited assisting with research and investigations of structures for the completion of Historic Structure Reports (HSRs).
·        Limited site visits and field work to document existing conditions with descriptions, photographs and maps will be a part of the job.

Objectives/Targets:
  • Completion of evaluations and updates to historic structure database entries for assigned national parks.
  • Research and synopsis of National Register of Historic Places information for assigned historic structures.
  • Field work evaluation of historic structure conditions.

Position will be supervised by the onsite Architectural Historian

Eligibility:
·        Knowledge of historic architecture, cultural landscapes, documentation of cultural resources, historic preservation practices and the National Register of Historic Places criteria is preferred;
·        Research, writing and computer skills are essential;
·        Knowledge of graphic programs (Adobe Creative Suite) is highly beneficial.
·        Graduate or junior/senior year undergraduate students studying or having recently completed degrees in historic preservation, historic architecture, or a related field preferred; previous field experience preferred.
·        Candidates selected for an interview will be required to submit writing samples.

NPS Region 1 (https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1651/visit.htm) contains over 80 park units from Maine to Virginia and West Virginia, with several new parks proposed for establishment over the next several years. The HSRD office is located within Lowell National Historical Park in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, which is accessible by commuter rail, bus service and car from other cities and towns in the northern Boston metropolitan area.

Work will include an overnight trip or trips to national parks within Region 1.
