PRACTICUM or INTERNSHIP or VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE
STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC SERVICES
 
 
The Student-Athlete Academic Services unit within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Iowa is seeking qualified candidates for the educational and/or volunteer opportunity described below.
The University of Iowa is an NCAA Division I Power Five institution and a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Department of Athletics manages 24 varsity sports programs and related events with a workforce of approximately 225 regular employees and 450 temporary employees. Athletics is a people-centric organization that operates under a “Win. Objective 
Serve in an academic support role within the Student-Athlete Academic Services office. Practicum experiences include assisting student-athletes with short and long term academic goal setting; monitoring student-athlete classroom progress; communicating with the Director for Retention and Academic Coordinators regarding student academic performance; monitoring evening study table when assigned; and assisting with student development programming.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled as a student in a program of study and/or serve in a support services staff position at the University of Iowa. Individuals will be selected based upon current staffing needs.
 
Duration
 
Fall 2020: August – December
Spring 2020: January – May  
Summer 2020: June – July
 
Weekly Schedule
10-20 hours per week. All practicum hours must be logged daily within the Grades First tracking system. 
 
Detailed Responsibilities
(1)   Learning Assistant Role
Practicum students will be assigned 7-10 students from various sport teams to meet with weekly. Duties include weekly meetings with the students, tracking student academic progress in their classes, and making recommendations about campus resources.
(2)   Tutoring Role
Assigned student athletes in content-specific coursework. Serve as a tutor for these courses on an individual or group basis. Must have taken specified courses and show proof of success in each. Prior teaching/tutoring experience preferred.
 
(3)   Study Table Monitor Role
Monitoring evening study table as needed; ensuring compliance with study table policies and procedures; managing the study table facility; and securing the Gerdin Athletic Learning Center.
(4)   Student Development Role
Assist Associate Director for Operations and Events and Director of Educational Programming with programs throughout the semester. Includes ISAAC, Life Skills events, community service, team-sponsored programs, and student athlete award recognition and banquets.
(5)   Duties as assigned by Student-Athlete Academic Services staff.
