Internship: Climate Education Researcher

THE POSITION
Hennepin County's Environment and Energy Department is seeking a Climate Change Audience Research Intern to uncover the public's knowledge, interest, and attitudes regarding climate change. The researcher will help the county understand the public's motivations and barriers to take action on climate change in order to develop effective outreach programs and messaging strategies.
The research intern will conduct a literature review of research that has been carried out locally and nationally, facilitate conversations with partners about their public engagement around climate change, and develop an actionable summary report of the findings.

The Environment and Energy department focuses on protecting and preserving the environment for current and future generations. The department is leading the county's development of a Climate Action Plan in 2020. Learn more at www.hennepin.us/climateaction.

Location and hours:
This position is located at the Hennepin County Environment and Energy Department, 701 Fourth Avenue South, Suite 700, Minneapolis, MN.

This intern will work 15 to 20 hours per week; in the office at least one day per week on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Other hours are flexible to work weekday, evening, or weekend.

This intern will start in April 2020 for 3 months with the possibility to extend to 6 months.

This position is a limited duration, temporary, non-benefit earning internship.
In this internship, you will:    
  • Work with the project lead to develop a list of sources to include in the literature review.
  • Review sources and compile key findings.
  • Work with the project team to identify and reach out to key partners and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and help facilitate conversations with the key partners and stakeholders.
  • Work with the project lead to develop and present a summary report of the key findings.
Need to have:
  • Current enrollment in a graduate level program in the atmospheric or climate science, environmental studies, environmental or natural science, environmental education, psychology and behavior science, public affairs, public policy, or political science, or another related field.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Available to work 15 to 20 hours per week and be in the office at least one day per week on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
  • Ability to travel within the Twin Cites metro area to attend events.

  • Experience:
  • Conducting literature reviews or similar research projects.
  • Setting up and facilitating conversations or interviews for a research project.
  • Gathering and analyzing audience and behavior research.
  • Summarizing and presenting findings from a research project.
  • Ability to:
  • Make scientific, environmental, technical, or other complex information understandable and relatable to a general audience.
  • Compile, organize, and analyze data to identify key findings.
  • Effectively summarize and present research findings through written and oral communications.
  • Work effectively with people that are diverse in culture, values, education, occupation, income, age, gender, etc.
  • Efficiently plan and manage workload with limited supervision.
  • Work effectively both with teams and independently.
