Watershed Technician

The intern will primarily work in the field throughout the Gunnison Field Office, conducting inventories of springs and roads. There are two major projects where the intern will work: Grazing Permit Renewals and Restoration. 









Grazing Permit Renewals

·       Inventory up to 111 springs within the project area, using Level 1 Protocol for Springs, Peat lands, and other Groundwater Dependent Wetlands (http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/projects/gwde/documentation/index.shtml). Spring inventories will collect data on geology, water quality, spring types, discharge, and UTM’s of each site. 
·       Conduct PFC assessments of streams http://www.blm.gov/nstc/library/pdf/Final%20TR%201737-9.pdf
·       Use a tablet and Arc Collector to collect spring data.
·       Measure discharge, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and specific conductance (SPC) of springs.
·       Collect pH, DO, specific conductance, and discharge of streams. In addition, grab samples of E. Coli and Fecal coliform will be collected from 6 streams.








Restoration

Mesic Meadow Restoration

·        Gain on the job training in site selection and design of restoration practices. Work with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, USFS, and Shawn Connor.
·        As needed, work with Western Colorado Conservation Corps crews and volunteers to construct rock structures using methods in Zeedyk and Clothier (2014).
·        Install ground water wells and other monitoring equipment.
·        Help other project partners with monitoring, such as vegetation response.

Fen Restoration

·        Work with WCCC crews building a fence around the Butterfly Fen.
·        Restore natural flow patterns in the Butterfly Fen by filling in trails with and sod plugs. 









Road Decommissioning

·        With Arc Collector, GPS closed route decommissioning done in 2020.









Other Projects

·        Water Quality sampling with Coal Creek Watershed Coalition in Crested Butte
·        Assist Aquatic Assessment Inventory Monitoring (AIM) crews in upland vegetation, streams (lotic), and wetlands (lentic).
·        Other BLM programs such abandoned mines, weeds, range, and wildlife as needed.  
Maintain BLM diversions and monitor diversion rates in flumes.
