Secondary Latin Teacher

Job Product: Student understanding of Latin that furthers the development of character and intellect.
General Purpose: The Latin teacher is responsible for developing students’ academic excellence and virtue by creating a positive culture of inquiry and learning and providing students with challenging and meaningful learning activities and experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Subject matter knowledge
  • Written command of a standard version of Latin (the version used by a formally educated speaker of the language of the time period)
  • Knowledge of culturally and historically significant literary and non-literary texts and authors associated with Latin; literary traditions, periods, and genres
  • Characteristics of beginning, intermediate, and advanced reading and writing pedagogy in Latin
  • Similarities and differences between Latin and English
  • Theories of, and differences between, first and second language acquisition, as well as of modern and ancient language acquisition
  • Knowledge of the other arts (historical traditions, genres, and major artists) associated with Latin
  • Knowledge of the political, social, and intellectual history of the country or culture with which Latin is or was originally associated

 Minimum Requirements:  
  • Bachelors degree, preferably in the Classics/Latin, with at least 24 semester hours in Latin
Experience: 
  • Prior teaching experience preferred but not required
