Director of Policy & Research

DIRECTOR OF POLICY & RESEARCH / LOBBYIST
Organization: The mission of the Lincoln Independent Business Association (LIBA) is: to provide leadership and educational opportunities to the business community; to educate the public concerning the vital role of business in creation of meaningful jobs, and in meeting the payrolls that allow our citizens to enjoy quality of life; to communicate the concerns of the business community to elected and appointed officials at all levels of local government; and to support political candidates who understand and promote the free enterprise system. LIBA represents more than 1,200 businesses in the Lincoln area.
General Duties: Provide research and policy input to the Lincoln Independent Business Association regarding issues facing LIBA Members before local, state, and federal government. Serving as a lobbyist for LIBA.
Position: The position is full-time – exempt and includes attending committee meetings at the direction of the President plus attending City Council, Planning Department, JPA, County, State and School Board Meetings as needed. The position may require that you register as a lobbyist with the state of Nebraska for the purpose of creating Legislation and working with state Senators.
Position Hours: General office hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. However, employee should expect to attend meetings from time to time outside general office hours.
Job Requirements: Excellent research and writing skills, strong computer aptitude, oral and verbal communication skills and ability to work flexible hours. Degree in either law or political science is helpful.
Specific Duties:
  • Create and maintain a chart and files tracking items before the Nebraska Legislature, Lincoln City Council, Planning Commission, County Board, and School Board that impact LIBA Members. It shall be the duty of the employee to monitor new items before these bodies and notify the President of items that may impact LIBA members.
  • Research and prepare policy statements on behalf of LIBA, following the direction, and with the assistance of, the President and the various Committees, consistent with the oversight and direction of the Board.
  • Present position statements to elected officials and provide testimony on behalf of LIBA. Defend LIBA positions and debate issues with elected officials.
  • Attend LIBA Committee Meetings as directed by the President and provide research and background information to those Committees.
  • Write and disseminate media releases.
  • Report to the President and Board of Directors as requested.
