Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) is one of the nation's premier public radio stations producing programming for radio, digital and live audiences and operates a 46-station radio network serving nearly all of Minnesota and parts of surrounding states. Reaching 1 million listeners each week, MPR and its three regional services'MPR News, Classical MPR and The Current'produce programming for radio, digital and live audiences. Intern, Finance
As a Finance Intern, you will have the opportunity through special projects and internal audits to provide insight and recommendations to strengthen financial data, underlying business processes, and the system of internal controls.
 
Key Learning Goals:
  • Survey Finance Department Functions - Through project work and time spent with financial leaders over the course of the internship we will provide opportunities to learn about the various career opportunities in the finance department and gain a general understanding of how the various functions work together including: accounting, audit, internal controls, cash receipts/disbursements, systems, payroll, treasury, reporting, planning/analysis, risk management, and governance.
  • Finance skills learn many practical skills needed to have a successful career in finance including: workflow coordination, information systems, financial testing and documentation, analysis, and creating actionable written recommendations.
  • Assigned projects from our annual goals to be completed over the term.
 
Responsibilities:
Project work will draw upon technical concepts learned in school and provide opportunities to develop other general skills such as communication, problem solving and project management. Projects are intended to provide a variety of experiences in the finance department and will likely be focused on the following areas:
  • Internal Audit - Plan and perform internal audits, document that selected transactions are appropriate and processed in accordance with written policies and procedures. Address questionable items in a manner that is consistent with our company values.
  • Internal Controls - Evaluate existing policies, procedures, user permissions, and work flows to identify and coordinate appropriate changes.
  • Other Financial Projects Other functions may include financial reporting and planning, supporting information system initiatives, annual audit preparation, and other financial analysis.

Required Qualifications:
  • Enrolled Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in an undergraduate or graduate business program or have earned a degree within the last 12 months in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Demonstrated self-starter, with strong critical thinking and analytical abilities.
  • Effective problem solver: requires strong coordination and communication skills.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office skills including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Completed introductory course work in accounting.
  • Familiar with and willing to learn fundamental accounting, internal control, and auditing concepts.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in bookkeeping, accounting or auditing.
  • Prior leadership and coordination experience (e.g. student group, clubs, work experience, etc.).
