What you will do
The Deputy Director of Finance & Internal Controls leads the Finance team, made up of 11 employees, and administers a $77 million budget. This team provides fiscal support to the rest of the department including the management of all funds received and distributed to multiple entities. The Deputy Director oversees the financial reporting and accounting of funds and the Internal Controls efforts of the department, and manages the on-going expenses and budgeting for the department.
This position works closely with many stakeholders such as key leaders within the department, across state government agencies and our partners in local governments (counties, municipalities and tribes) across the state. This position serves a critical role in ensuring all funds received are appropriately and accurately accounted for on behalf of the State and our partners.  
Our ideal candidate will have: 
  • a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Business Management, Economics, or a related field and relative accounting experience is preferred;
  • knowledge of financial and budget planning and management;
  • knowledge of state and deferral financial laws and guidelines;
  • ability to work collaboratively with a variety of groups on fiscal and policy issues;
  • experience leading a team, providing direction and focusing on growth and development of its members.

This position is located in Pierre, SD with limited travel required. Salary negotiable depending on experience. 
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
