Agriculture Livestock Inspection Specialist II

DAS - Shared Services is advertising for the Department of Agriculture.

This position works with livestock health issues in the north-central region of Nebraska (i.e. Counties for this Work Region include: Keya Paha, Brown, Holt, Blaire, Loup, Garfield, Wheeler, Valley, Greeley, Sherman, Howard, Merrick, Buffalo, Hall, Phelps, Kearney, Adams, Hamilton, Clay, Harlan, Franklin, Webster, Nuckolls, Rock and Boyd Counties.), under the supervision of a Veterinary Field Officer, as related to state and federal regulatory programs. An Inspector is responsible for: assessing livestock production compliance with state and federal regulations related to importation, disease surveillance, testing, licensing, emergency response, livestock feeds, trace-ability, carcass disposal and vaccinations. Daily travel is required in this position with occasional overnight stays and weekend duties possible. 

***This position will be understaffed at an Agriculture Livestock Inspections Specialist I with the expectation of becoming a level II*** Pay for Level I $15.861/hour. Pay for Level II $18.330/hour.

Job Duties:
Conduct routine inspections of pet feed and rendering plants and livestock auction markets with limited veterinarian supervision; Perform basic testing of livestock and poultry for disease-free certification, regulatory disease suspects, and tracing; Conduct disease surveillance at expos and exhibitions; Proficiently draw blood samples from livestock and poultry and correctly complete test charts; Become certified in specific test procedures and the rapid whole blood test for pullorum testing; Perform testing, investigations and other related duties for slaughter tracebacks and suspect herds; Inspect quarantined premises to verify compliance with herd health plans, to include initiation and/or verification of compliance for quarantine release; Complete surveillance, testing and compliance activities required for applicable federal program diseases; Conduct and set up training and/or presentation programs for livestock producers, public constituents, etc.; Monitor sales and miscellaneous markets for livestock movement compliance; Collect and prepare samples for testing; Develop simple herd plans with limited supervisory guidance; Enforce rules of animal disease trace-ability with official federal identification; Respond to emergency situations; Develop relationships with veterinarians, market operators, cattle buyers, and producers, etc.; Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED: LEVEL I: Two years' experience working in a relevant discipline LEVEL II: Post high school coursework/training in agriculture, plant/animal or natural sciences, or other program related field OR a vocation certificate in electrical, mechanical, engineering or other program related field. AND Two years' experience working in a relevant discipline.

OTHER: Daily driving within specific region and some overnights.
