Assistant to the Dean of Instruction

SUMMER UNPAID INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Position: Refugee Youth Summer Academy Assistant to the Dean of Instruction
Reports to: Dean of Instruction
Position Term:  June 10 - August 14
Hours: Minimum 15 hours per week, preference to candidates with more hours
Scope of Work:
The Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes. Field trips are held on Fridays.
The Assistant to the Dean of Instruction will work closely with the Dean of Instruction to ensure high quality daily instruction, academic assessment, and staff appreciation throughout the Refugee Youth Summer Academy. The Assistant to the Dean of Instruction will provide logistical support to teaching staff, coordinate instructional coaching, coordinate classroom assessment materials, collect, enter and analyze assessment data, and ensure the overall day to day classroom needs of the Academy are met. This is an unpaid internship.
Learning Objectives:
1. Intern will learn management and organizational skills required to effectively support a teaching staff
2. Intern will strengthen knowledge of current pedagogical best practices and ensure individual learning outcomes and safe and effective classrooms
3. Intern will learn how to identify opportunities for improvement of classroom teachers and practice instructional coaching techniques
Essential Job Function:
· Participate in all June Meet & Greets, staff trainings, program meetings, and staff development activities, thereafter
· Assist the Dean of Instruction in the implementation and analysis of various student assessment initiatives including but not limited to content area assessments, progress reports, and report cards
· Monitor submission of, enter, and analyze student assessment data
· Maintain students’ files
· Collect and log required lesson planning documentation from teachers
· Assist in the timely production and dissemination of necessary resources for all teaching staff
· Assist in the coordination and set up of caregiver-teacher conferences
· Assist in the coordination of school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
· Assist in the coordination of staff-appreciation events and initiatives
· Record and distribute minutes of Lead and Co-Teacher staff meetings
· Perform other administrative tasks assigned by the Dean of Instruction
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Education or relevant field; Master’s degree candidate in Education preferred
· Classroom teaching experience
· Experience with data collection and analysis
· Strong organizational skills
· Strong written and oral communicative skills
· Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience required
· Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations desirable
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
· Second language proficiency in French, Spanish, Arabic or other relevant language highly desirable
