Museum Education Assistant Internship

Job Description
The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is looking to fill a Museum Education Assistant Internship (Administrative Intern) to assist the state.

Internship Purpose and Goals
  • To assist the State Historical Museum of Iowa education team with creating and implementing summer programming, including but not limited to assisting with family and break programming, workshops, and monthly family programs.
 
Time Commitment
  • Duration: Summer Semester
  • Frequency: Minimum of 8 hours per week, unpaid
  • Hours must be completed Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. 
  • Must be available on these dates for specific programming:
  • June 10, June 15-19, June 29-30, and July 8.
 
Duties and Essential Activities
  • Interact with general museum visitors of all ages and provide great customer service.
  • Assist and help lead general educational programming and events such as Goldie's Kids Club History Mystery, Storytime, and Innovative Iowans programs.
  • Assist with special summer programs including Young Writers Workshop, Junior Curators, and Teacher Professional Development. 
  • Develop ideas for new educational programming and creating education guides for a variety of different audiences to be used within the museum.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree in history, education, or other program applicable to museum education.
  • Have an interest in museums, education, or museum work.
  • Must conduct oneself in mature/professional manner and be able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to verbally interact with visitors of all ages, donors, and other museum stakeholders.
 
Training
  • The intern will be invited to attend staff/department meetings as necessary/applicable.
  • Intern will receive hands-on experience managing museum visitors and develop customer service skills.
 
Department/Supervisor
  • The internship will be supervised by the Museum Education Coordinator and Museum Education & Outreach Manager.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
