Management Intern (Summer 2020)

Position: Refugee Youth Summer Academy Management Intern (2 positions)
Reports to: Education & Learning Manager, Caitlyn Griffith-Heritage
Position Term: June 1-August 28, 2020
Hours: Minimum 15 hours per week, preference to candidates seeking more hours
Scope of Work:
The Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.
The Management Intern will assist the Education & Learning Manager to oversee operation of the Refugee Youth Summer Academy and support the Academy’s daily needs. Based at the IRC-NY main office but working as needed on-site at the Summer Academy, the Management Intern will support communication and coordination between the Summer Academy site staff and the main office. The Management Intern will focus primarily on external relations, donor reporting, and personnel support, but overall provide logistical and organizational support to the Education & Learning Manager, assist with key management responsibilities, and help to ensure that special projects and events are a success.
This is an unpaid internship.
Essential Job Function:
· Assist with pre-program preparations and day to day operations and management of the Refugee Youth Summer Academy
· Facilitate communication between the Summer Academy site and IRC-NY main offices
· Support logistics of RYSA program and special events
· Provide onboarding and exit support for team of 60+ temporary staff and volunteers
· Produce program materials according to branding guidelines
· Manage special projects as assigned
· Complete post-program data analysis and internal reporting
Learning Objectives:
· Student will learn about the various management responsibilities of a complex educational program.
· Student will learn how to create workflows that ensure staff support and productivity.
· Student will learn how to communicate essential messages to internal and external audiences.
Qualifications
· Current undergraduate or graduate student in Education, Non-profit Management or related field, or within one year of graduation
· Strong organizational and analytical skills
· Flexible, and able to solve problems
· Excellent written and oral communication skills
· Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience required
· Fluent in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word
· Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations desirable
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Fluency in a second language helpful (such as: Arabic, Burmese, Dari, Farsi, French, Spanish, Nepali)
