Physical Education Teacher, Refugee Youth Summer Academy

Position: Refugee Youth Summer Academy Physical Education Teacher
Reports to: Dean of Instruction
Position Term: June 30 – August 14, 2020
Hours: Training: June 30 & July 1, 2: 9:00AM - 5:00PM
Main Program: July 6 – August 14: Monday-Thursday, 12:00-4:00PM
 
Scope of Work:
The Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 120 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes. Field trips are held on Fridays. There are six classes, typically a lower elementary (K-2), two upper elementary grade levels (3-5) a Junior High, and two High School level classes.
 
The Physical Education Teacher will design and implement a six week curriculum that builds students’ knowledge, skills, and interest in physical education. Additionally, the Physical Education Teacher will contribute to the Program’s goals of fostering students’ social-emotional development and building a strong sense of community among the students and staff. This is an unpaid volunteer or internship opportunity.
 
Essential Job Functions:
· Participate in pre-program Teachers’ Meet & Greet on June 25, and All Staff trainings and all program meetings and staff development activities, thereafter
· Plan and submit a 6-week culturally- and age-responsive Physical Education curriculum for elementary and JHS/HS students, using sheltered instructional teaching methodologies for English Language Learners
· Submit weekly lesson plans in advance of teaching, utilizing RYSA lesson planning format
· Perform and report on pre- and post-assessments, to inform curriculum and lesson design, and baseline progress data. Complete all staff program evaluation
· Complete all required reporting on time. Comply with all agency policies and protocols
· Productively plan for and incorporate Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and volunteer Peer Mentors into classroom instruction
· Complete progress report and final report cards for each student
 
Internship Learning Objectives:
1.     Lesson planning using best practices for working with ELLs
2.     Integrating social-emotional learning principles into curriculum
3.     Developing, implementing, and reporting on assessments

Qualifications
· Minimum, BA.  Graduate student, pursuing a degree in education or related field, preferred
· Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
· Knowledge of sports health and safety precautions required
· At least 2 years’ experience working with youth in sports/physical education required
· Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience required
· Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
· Strong team player who is self-directed and organized
· Reliable and flexible
· Second language proficiency in French, Spanish, Fulani, Mandingo, Nepali, Haitian Creole, Ukrainian, or other relevant language is desirable
