About AmeriCorps VISTA:

Year-long AmeriCorps VISTA members serve for a full year and perform indirect service such as resource development and program coordination.  

Service begins on Monday, June 8, 2020 and ends on Monday, June 7, 2021.

About the City of Fairbanks:

Unemployment, food insecurity, and homelessness are a few of the many challenges that plague the citizens of interior Alaska. The harsh winters, high cost of living, and limited transportation services further complicate these issues. The City of Fairbanks (CoF) is the intermediary sponsor for 11 VISTA projects. The mission statement is to “efficiently and effectively administer ongoing operations and functions of the borough, advocate for the best interests of the citizens of the borough, protect and defend the interests of the citizens of the borough, facilitate economic growth, and provide community direction and principled leadership.” The VISTA Leader will play a vital role in helping the CoF support current VISTA projects as well as identify and address gaps in services within the Fairbanks area by expanding the reach of the VISTA program to address poverty in interior Alaska. Interior Alaska’s VISTA program is sponsored by the CoF and housed in the Mayor’s Office. 

**Prerequisite to serve as VISTA Leader: must have served one full term in AmeriCorps (VISTA, NCCC, State/National) or have served in the Peace Corps.**

Activities will include:
  • Support upwards of 11 VISTAs serving at organizations throughout the borough. 
  • Collect and compile monthly reports and timesheets
  • Recruit new members and projects
  • Promote program activities and accomplishments
  • Increase each VISTA project’s effectiveness and sustainability 
  • Mentor, troubleshoot, and mediate 
  • Create and share resources 
  • Organize and coordinate monthly trainings

Program Benefits : 
  • Living allowance of $1,411 per month.
  • End-of-service choice between an education award of $6,095 or cash stipend of $3,000.
  • Relocation allowance of $0.40 a mile (after the first 50 miles).
  • Settling-in allowance of $750 (if moving 50+ miles).
