ORNL Life Cycle Energy Systems Modeling Analysis Post-Master’s Research Associate

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy, environment, and security.
The Center for Transportation Analysis in the Energy and Transportation Science Division is seeking a Post-Master’s Research Associate to engage in energy systems modeling analysis research under the Transportation Materials Analysis Program. The Research Associate will develop and test unique models and databases to address questions related to economic viability, process cost modeling, systems analysis, infrastructure requirements, recycling, and institutional and social acceptance of next generation materials and clean energy manufacturing technologies, all from a life-cycle perspective, using technical and economic data from industry and researchers. The Program currently supports research initiatives of lightweight and propulsion materials under the DOE Vehicle Technologies program and clean energy manufacturing technologies through the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office.
A recent focus of this program has been in the competitive analysis of the manufacturing supply chain for next generation materials such as carbon fiber and wide band-gap materials for the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office. The Research Associate will work independently and with senior technical staff in collecting data for all steps to develop manufacturing-process flow sheets for the manufacturing of next-generation materials for different potential market applications and evaluate the life-cycle economic, energy, and environmental impacts. The focus of the analyses is to understand the drivers of U.S. competitiveness in the manufacturing portions of clean energy materials technologies, including the key factors behind manufacturing location decisions made by businesses.

Qualifications:
The candidate should have a master’s degree in mechanical or industrial engineering and an excellent quantitative/business research background. An educational background in advanced materials technologies is preferred but not required. Candidates must have strong analytical capabilities with experience in the area of cost modeling and database development for the technology assessment related to the automotive industry and the supply chain of clean energy technologies. Some experience in working with policy issues related to these industries is advantageous. 
Experience in manufacturing process modeling of advanced manufacturing technologies is advantageous but not required. The successful candidate should be proficient in the use of industry standard modeling and simulation tools, such as spreadsheet-based process cost modeling. Excellent oral and written communication skills are needed to make weekly presentations to sponsors and others, and to prepare reports, proposals, and publications/journal articles. The successful candidate also needs strong interpersonal skills to support team-building, and must have a strong commitment to scientific integrity. Limited travel will be required for this position. No security clearance is required.
The ORNL Post-Master’s Research Associates Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
