Farmers' Market Public Service Summer Intern

GENERAL PURPOSE
Provide backbone support to the Texarkana Farmers’ Market for the implementation of the USDA Farmers’ Market Grant program that will increase local food diversity and improve food quality through a framework of collaboration, use of evidence-based practices, and assessment of data for continuous outcome measurements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
•       Weekend work required. Participate in market days on Saturdays from 6am-12pm (or close) and night markets from 5-8pm as planned during the market season May-July.
•       Assist with the farmers’ market booth operations including accepting vendor and customer payments, selling farmers’ market merchandise, distributing promotional materials and surveys.
•       Assist with the Cultural Foods Coordinator with event setup and take down. Provide cultural food event support where needed.
•       Develop outreach materials and update website to enhance public education and awareness of the Texarkana Farmers’ Market
•       Participate in the planning and coordination of ongoing farmers’ market programs to assess the needs of the community.
•       Improve the collection of meaningful data related to the farmers’ market 
•       Researching evidence-based programs and practices initiated by farmers’ markets
PERIPHERAL DUTIES

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
a.    High school diploma or equivalent
b.    Must be currently completing coursework towards a bachelor’s or graduate degree in public administration, business administration or a related field, or a candidate with college coursework
c.    Valid state drivers’ license
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
a.    Ability to meet deadlines
b.    Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently
c.    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
d.    Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
e.    Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization
f.      Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, percentages, area, circumference and volume
g.    Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
h.    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardized exists
i.      Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
j.      Experience with and knowledge of computer operations including but not limited to knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and database applications

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderately loud as the employee is exposed to medium to large public crowds. The employee is exposed to outdoor summer conditions which could include heat, humidity and rain.
