Landscape Management / Interpretation Intern

The Landscape Management/Interpretation Intern will work with the lead gardener to help care for and maintain the site’s cultural landscape, which includes the neighboring Green Hill property, and will work with the Interpretive staff to inform visitors about the cultural landscape and the importance in the Olmsted office, as well as assist in developing better visitor understanding of the conservation land and historic view shed restoration project.

The intern will work with a highly skilled staff, that includes lead gardener, park rangers, and the site manager to gain hands-on experience in the proper care and maintenance of lawns, shrubs, and trees; the use of customer service and communications techniques to convey information and present tours; and the execution of plans to create, set-up and monitor public engagement events.

The park’s professional staff will provide guidance, mentoring, training, and supervision. The intern will also work with other staff, interns, volunteers, and park partners to accomplish shared goals.

Projects and experiences will include:
·        Planting and maintaining historic landscapes according to cultural landscape reports and management plans;
·        Preparing and conducting landscape and design tours; using digital cameras to document the garden and historic landscape throughout the season, and working with park’s digital media team to share with remote visitors;
·        Serving as a core team member for weekend public programming and special events throughout the summer season.

Daily work is performed according to prescribed plans or specific directions including detailed methods and tools. During the public season, the intern will work Wednesday through Sunday. Generally, work will be directed by the grounds management team Wednesday through Friday, and by park rangers Saturday and Sunday.
