ACE: USFWS National Trail Inventory Data Collection Team Member - Nationwide/Traveling - Americorps Eligible

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), is seeking 4 Trail Inventory Team Members to implement the National Trail Inventory project at an estimated 150 field stations on USFWS lands across the U.S. Primary duties will be field based, including remote data collection and processing; this includes a variety of spatial and attribute information of existing trails systems and sharing this data with the Trail Inventory Data Manager, Logistics Coordinator, and Project Leader. 
The 2018-2021 USFWS Trails Inventory Program is part of an ongoing, nationwide effort to compile a comprehensive and accurate trail and trail asset database for all trails and trail assets located on Service lands so that the agency can make informed management and maintenance decisions regarding trail systems in the future. This is required by Title USC 23, which requires the Service and other Federal Land Management Agencies to inventory all public use transportation assets under their purview. Trails are considered part of those transportation assets.
Trail Inventory Team Members will be part of an interdisciplinary team charged with the generation of on the ground data collected across diverse USFWS lands. Data collection will be done according to standard and concise protocol. 
This opportunity is intended for committed young professionals with GIS, trails inventory, or spatial data management background/experience. Those with trail maintenance or construction experience are encouraged to apply. 
 
Term 1: (2 Positions) 
Start Date - End Date: late April-May 2020 - 26 weeks from start date
 
Term 2: (2 Positions)
Start Date - End Date: mid-June 2020 - 26 weeks from start date

Location: This is a field-based, highly mobile position requiring extended travel, supervised by ACE's Salt Lake City, Utah Office. Team members will be traveling to USFWS lands nationwide.

Compensation: Members will contribute ~40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $400/week paid out biweekly for food and incidental living expenses. Lodging and transportation will be provided during travel. 
 
AmeriCorps: Members MAY be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award for up to $3097.50 upon the successful completion of service.
 
Position Description: Trail Inventory Data Collection Team Members will travel to an estimated 75 stations. This position is highly mobile and will require extended and frequent travel and the ability to be adaptive to ever changing locations, situations, and environmental conditions.
  • Participate in trail inventory data collection training.
  • Continuous travel to National Wildlife Refuges and National Fish Hatcheries across the nation, spending on average 1-3 days at each location.
  • Conduct daily trail inventory activities, walking trails in all weather, recording trail data (e.g., location, length, slope, condition, deficiencies) using GIS enabled technology.
  • Provide appropriate documentation of inventory (photos, data points, reports).
  • Coordinate with the Trail Inventory Data Manager, Trail Inventory Logistics Coordinator, Trail Inventory Project Leader and others to ensure data is accurate and delivered in the required format by determined deadlines.
  • Participate in check-in calls with the Trail Inventory team to report progress and discuss obstacles.
  • Assist the Trail Inventory team with processing field data and other project-related tasks.
  • Assist with other tasks specific to the assigned FWS station as time permits
 
Qualifications: Applicants must have a degree or be pursuing a degree in ecology, wildlife management, natural resource management, earth science, parks and recreation, rangeland management, or other related disciplines appropriate to the position. A relevant combination of experience and education is also acceptable. Resume and Cover Letter must contain information to show that the applicant meets the experience needed, as defined in this announcement. 
Required: 
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be between the ages of 21 and 30 (35 if military service).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record. No personal vehicle is necessary as all travel between refuges and on site will be in the ACE project vehicle.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically and brainstorm creative solutions. 
  • Willingness to represent ACE and USFWS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
Preferred:
  • Education and/or experience in data collection, trails construction/maintenance, GIS, or natural resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the USFWS.
  • Experience identifying and addressing challenges on a project before they become issues.
  • Strong desire to enter public service as a conservation professional.

PLC Competitive Hiring Authority: This position is authorized by the Public Land Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 and expanded by the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2013. Members who meet basic requirements during their term of service may be eligible to receive their Noncompetitive Hiring Eligibility Certificate to be used when applying to future federal jobs. Requirements are: (1) Members must be between the ages of 18 to 30 and (2) Members must complete at least 640 hours on a federally approved PLC Project.
