Stipend: $565/week (+ Education Award)
Term: March 30th, 2020 - September 25th, 2020
Reports to: USDA Forest Service - Cibola National Forest
Location: Albuquerque, NM 87113
Status: 900 - hour AmeriCorps Service Term
Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award $3,047.50 after each successful completion

The Ancestral Lands program is specifically designed to engage Native American youth and young adults with offices in Acoma, Durango, Gallup, Salida, Zuni, and Hopi. *Ancestral Lands serves local tribal communities in the regions we operate. Preference given to Native American applicants.
Program Overview:
This Resource Assistant will work jointly with the heritage and volunteer program staff on the Cibola National Forest to improve Heritage Volunteer Program capacity and reporting. One of the primary partner organizations this RA will be working with is the Friends of Tijeras Pueblo. The Friends of Tijeras Pueblo is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the interpretation of the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site. It has operated in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and run by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Friends of Tijeras Pueblo is dedicated to the preservation of Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site through protection, promotions, and interpretation. 
Essential functions and responsibilities:
  • Provide general support to the Cibola National Forest heritage program with an emphasis on building capacity in the volunteer program and increasing viability/stability of existing partnerships.
  • Work with archaeologist and help manage restoration of the historic Water Canyon Cabin on Magdalena RD.
  • Work with heritage program to learn basic archaeological field methods and reporting.
  • Work with Cibola Recreation and Partnership Coordinator on utilizing the Cibola's volunteer management platform and reporting on heritage volunteer hours. The RA would help develop the heritage component of a new volunteer reporting system and would be responsible for reporting volunteer hours for the Cibola heritage program (frequently under-reported) 
  • Training, monitoring, and coordinating volunteers in the implementation of all programs and Museum-related activities
  • Expanding current education and volunteer programs in innovative ways
  • Strengthening existing partnerships and seeking out new partnerships with organizations in the surrounding communities
  • Assisting with management of the Tijeras Pueblo interpretive site, gardens, and Museum
As part of this position, the Resource Assistant would develop skills in the following:
  • Volunteer/partnership and recreation management with an emphasis on Archaeological resources. The RA would be working directly under the supervision of the Sandia/Mountainair Zone Archaeologist on the Cibola National Forest, but would also shadow the archaeology seasonal crew to learn basic archaeology field methods.
  • Public interpretation skills - helping to develop exhibits, programs, and conduct tours. The RA would also be asked to help develop social media platforms for the Friends of Tijeras Pueblo. For this portion, the RA would collaborate with and be trained by experienced docents from the Friends of Tijeras Pueblo. 
  • The position would work with the Cibola Recreation Partnership Coordinator. In this capacity, they would learn strategies for volunteer/partnership management and agency reporting.
Desired Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position is a highly organized individual who has the ability to direct and coordinate people from a variety of backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have networking skills, familiarity with basic computer programs and technology, and data management skills (or the ability to learn them).
An individual with experience managing a museum and/or archaeological or historical site is preferred. A background in education and/or experience developing programs to engage both children and adults in educational activities is also preferred. 
Additionally, familiarity with the use of a variety of social media platforms for marketing purposes is also desired.

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High School Graduate or completion of Equivalency Program
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
  • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
  • A passport indicating that the INS has been approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • A departure record (INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • Valid driver’s license
