About AmeriCorps VISTA:

Summer associate AmeriCorps VISTA members serve for 10 weeks and perform direct service and work hands-on to alleviate issues such as summer learning loss, youth opioid prevention and hunger.  

Service begins on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 and ends on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

About Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District :

The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is combating poverty by promoting local food security measures in the USDA designated “food desert” of South Fairbanks. The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District Summer Associate will develop three urban community gardens. The produce from these gardens will augment the JP Jones Community Development summer youth program and the Fairbanks Community Food Bank. Activities include educating youth about gardening practices and nutrition, continuing development of two sustainable gardens in South Fairbanks and increasing community involvement with sustainable gardening. The person in the position would develop in-person communication, community engagement and garden development skills.

Activities include: 

• Consider alternate ways to improve safety, accuracy and efficiency in the garden before, during and after the gardening season
• Promote sustainable gardening to the community by creating an example for future community gardens
• Assist in harvesting and processing finished products
• Aid in distribution of produce to organizations within FSWCD’s outreach
• Work with gardens that provide food for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank to redistribute to needy families
• Use produce from the garden to augment the JP Jones Community Development Center summer youth program and the Fairbanks Community Food Bank
• Educate public about gardening practices, plant needs/nutrients and nutrition
• Attend local community meetings with supervisor to promote FSWCD and its projects

Program Benefits :
