Hours: Paid position. Up to 29 hours
Pay rate: $10/hr.
Dates: May 26, 2020 – July 31, 2020

Summary of Position:
  • The intern will assist with maintaining, updating, operating, preparing or completing various GIS/map data forms as required using computer aided drafting (CAD) and geographic information system (GIS) software programs. Which may include reports, correspondence, thematic maps, utility and utility as-built inventory maps, facilities maps, hurricane preparedness maps, road centerline files, statistical analysis, presentation materials, or other documents. Will also assist in collecting, storing, update, manipulate, analyze, and display geographically referenced information; electronically manipulates data files by importing, exporting, creating, recalling, editing, or updating data; stores and/or retrieves archived data.
 
Essential job functions:
  • Work with mentor to set development goals to satisfy college internship requirements
  • Participate in employee development programs attend meetings with GIS Analyst II and Human Resources
  • Acquire knowledge of City departmental functions and knowledge of GIS related functions
  • Assist with GIS projects as needed
 
Knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:
  • Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and citizens
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office 2010 and Internet research
 
Learning Goals:
  • Learn the varied duties and job functions of the Utilities - GIS divisions and how each duty and function assist with City goals. 
  • Develop a working knowledge of managing a variety of Utilities – GIS situations simultaneously
  • Improve business management skills and utilize such skills in the Utilities office environment.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current college student or recent graduate with verifiable GIS coursework in survey/mapping, geography, computer science or related field.
  • Experience in GIS applications is a plus
