Job Description
Title: Bureau of Land Management - Recreation Park Ranger Individual Placement
Start/End Date: May 12th, 2020 - October 30th, 2020
Stipend:  $499.20/week (+Education Award) 
Term:  25 weeks (including one week of PTO)
Reports To:  Bureau of Land Management - Royal Gorge Field Office
Location:  Canon City, CO 81212
Status:  900-hour AmeriCorps Service Term 
Benefits:  AmeriCorps Education Award $3,047.50 after successful completion

Program Overview: 
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages public lands to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations; including the management and protection of our nation's wild horses and burros on 26.9 million acres of public lands across 10 western states. The Recreation Program manages public lands for enhanced recreation experiences and quality of life, encourages sustainable travel and tourism development, establishes proactive travel management and planning, ensure public health and safety and improves the condition and accessibility of recreation sites and facilities, enhances visitor services including interpretive information and education, and encourages partnerships, volunteers, and citizen-centered public service. 
The focus of the intern position is to assist recreation staff in implementing and managing a day use fee site known as Guffey Gorge. The intern would work closely with BLM Recreation staff to monitor visitation and build awareness of the area's new rules. The intern would be trained as a Leave No Trace trainer and would assist in educating visitors on the principles that are applicable to the area. The intern would be trained as a collections officer and assist with administration of the fee program. The majority of their time will be spend tin the field with the opportunity to work with BLM staff to identify management needs and suggest improvements. In addition, the intern will perform similar duties in other areas within the Royal Gorge Field Office. The position is based out of Canon City with a drive time of one hour to Guffey Gorge and up to two hours to other areas.
Work may involve early morning hours, late afternoon hours, and will be expected to work holidays and weekends. A standard BLM uniform will be provided to wear while performing patrol and public contact duties. The intern must possess a valid driver's license to operate government vehicles and equipment. Essential roles and responsibilities include:
  • Present a positive image of the area and the BLM; ensuring visitor contact is conducted in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner.
  • Assists in advising visitors concerning safety, amenities available, and proper and authorized use of recreational facilitates. 
  • Assists in patrolling and inspecting facilities and aids in ensuring compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to Guffey Gorge.
  • Performs routine maintenance, repairs, and cleaning of recreation sites.
  • Ensures protection of property from visitor related depredation.
  • Oversees fee collection activities, maintaining records on and accounting for funds.
  • Monitors condition of recreation sites and resources.
  • Installs and maintains various types of signage on public lands.
Desired Skills/Qualifications: 
  • Ability to work somewhat independently in initiating, developing, or modifying work methods
  • Ability to administer operations, such as day to day operation of a recreation site, which involves on-site decisions and judgements
  • Ability to provide clear information or data both orally and in writing, in order to provide advice and guidance to supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability and knowledge to use basic tools for digging post holes, replacing damaged signs, and similar tasks
  • Currently pursuing or completed degree in Natural Resources or related field preferred
The successful applicant must be  self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

Housing: 
Housing is not provided with this position, however, assistance in finding local housing is provided.

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
  • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
  • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • A departure record ( INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • Driver's License
  • Per grant funding, candidate must be 18-30 years of age
