Activity Specialist - Lincoln Youth Facility

Holistic - Rehabilitative - Therapeutic. When it comes to serving high-acuity youth, these three traits compliment DHHS's Mission of Helping People Live Better Lives. To assist in that mission, the Lincoln Youth Rehabilitation Center is in need of an Activity Specialist to implement recreation therapy to high-acuity youth, ages 14-18. This role in instrumental in helping these youth help rebuild their life one step at a time.

Work schedule: Late morning - Evening hours including weekends/holidays

Examples of Work
The Activity Specialist plans and conducts various recreation, leisure, and rehabilitative services through group and individual interventions that are directly linked to the person's (patient) treatment plan goal and objectives. The position provides individual and group off-campus experiences to prepare individuals for safe discharge to the community. In addition, Activity Specialists plan holiday and other special recreation programming, maintain equipment and supplies, document on individual's progress toward patient treatment goals, supervise clients, and completes entries for treatment plan reviews.

Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Post high school coursework with an emphasis in recreation management, music, recreation therapy, occupational therapy, vocational rehabilitation or related field or experience in planning, coordinating, or directing activity or therapy services.

PREFERRED: Four-year degree in areas of study that promote recreation, health and/or leisure: such as, recreation therapy, art therapy, music therapy, health and fitness, nutrition, sports management, or any other related fields, or has four-year degree in area of study related to behavioral health. Work or internship experience facilitating recreation and/or leisure activities to adults. Work experience with individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses. Certification/certification eligible as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

OTHER: Must possess a valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: methods for planning and conducting therapeutic activities; the principles and methods of therapeutic interventions; the fundamentals and rules of various games, sports, and related leisure activities;

Skill in: utilizing therapy methods and techniques in carrying out therapeutic activities; communicating with residents, members, or patients and understanding their problems and needs; deterring deviant resident, member or patient behavior; observing, documenting, and evaluating assigned therapy services.

Ability to: form effective therapeutic relationships with residents, members, or patients; obtain and maintain resident, member, or patient interest and participation in activities; instruct residents, members, or patients how to perform an activity; observe and document resident, member, or patient behavior; keep records and compile reports; construct/modify equipment to meet the needs of clients.
