Landfill Environmental Technician or Trainee

The City of Madison Engineering Department is searching for a Landfill Environmental Technician to conduct monitoring, operation, and maintenance of the City's five closed landfills. This is an opportunity to work independently at closed municipal landfill sites that are currently maintained as public parks. The right fit is someone interested in all aspects of closed landfill operation: environmental monitoring, sample collection, system repair, and emergency response. You will join a well-functioning team in City Engineering, and on-the-job training will be provided. We are seeking candidates who are mechanically and detailed-oriented, can work independently, and are creative with problem-solving. Positions in this class may also perform other assignments based on the needs of the Division.

The selected employee may participate in a training and career progression program outlined below, if needed, as well as receive on-the job training. An individualized training program is developed for the Trainee to provide training to advance from a Level 1 Landfill Technician Trainee to Landfill Technician. Landfill Technicians demonstrate the ability to perform assigned essential functions and duties within a structured training program lasting up to 2 years. The trainee program is determined for each employee based on their training and experience at the time of hire. 

The successful candidate will be placed at the Landfill Technician Trainee with an annual salary of $48,203.48 or Landfill Technician with a $52,067.86 based upon experience, to be determined at the time of hire.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Landfill Technician Trainee (Compensation Group 15/05)
Employees at this level are provided training to provide fundamental job knowledge and skills in the areas of landfill gas monitoring, ground water and leachate sampling, and blower, pump, compressor, valve, and probe maintenance. Training consists primarily of on-the job activities. Employees work independently to perform routine monitoring and maintenance activities. Employees work with an experienced Landfill or Facilities Technician to learn basic landfill monitoring, maintenance and repair tasks and gain hands-on experience in identifying job hazards and the proper use of PPE; tool selection, use and care; and basic maintenance activities. 
 
Landfill Technician (15/07)
Employees at this level are expected to independently perform the full duties and responsibilities related to landfill gas monitoring, groundwater monitoring, and leachate sampling. Employees are also expected to independently install, replace, repair, and provide preventative maintenance to buildings, equipment, and landfill systems. Additionally employees will be expected to respond to landfill emergencies.
