Job Description
Title: FC-FLIP Visitor Information Specialist Intern
Timeline: May 25 - August 7, 2020
Term: 11 weeks
Stipend: $400/ week (+Education Award)
Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,289.95 upon successful completion of internship.
Location: Pagosa Springs, CO
Reports To: San Juan National Forest
Status: 300-hour AmeriCorps Service Term
Schedule: 40-hour week; occasional long days, weekend or evening work may be required.

Mentor: Kim Bristow, Support Services Specialist, San Juan National Forest
Responsibilities: This intern will be placed with the San Juan National Forest, Pagosa Ranger District. The Visitor Information Specialist will assist with daily public interaction by working at the front desk of the Pagosa Ranger District Office.
The primary responsibilities of the Visitor Information Specialist will be to assist with the daily operations of the Pagosa Ranger District front desk. The intern will interact with visitors, responding to a variety of inquiries regarding Forest Service activities, programs, facilities, polices and functions. Evaluates inquires in order to provide the most useful and appropriate information and to suggest other options, such as alternate routes or activities. Provides guidance to the public on rules and regulations regarding on-unit activities. Assists in selling forest timber permits and other items, such as maps and passes, in accordance with manual and handbook requirements. May handle clerical duties, such as mail and package delivery. Arranges and organizes interpretive displays and keeps track of brochure inventory. Occasional active physical activity, such as hiking over rough and varied terrain, working in inclement weather and in remote areas as well as lifting, bending, standing and carrying of moderate weight objects is also required.

- Desire to work with Forest visitors of all ages and backgrounds
- Strong verbal and written skills
- Microsoft Word , Excel, Publisher skills
- Clerical/ Organizational skills
- Ability to carry out and accomplish order in a timely manner
- Basic map reading skills
- Experience with natural history interpretation, environmental education, customer service, preferred.
- Clean driving record for operation of government vehicles
- A reliable personal vehicle is required
- Ability to be flexible and willingness to jump in to help as needed
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Training Provided: Orientation will be held in Silverton the first week of the internship and will include: backcountry skills and safety, introduction to federal careers and USA Jobs, natural resources and issues in the Four Corners, scientific and professional communications, and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification (interns need to prepare (8 hrs.) prior to arrival on the first day of the internship.
