PURPOSE OF JOB
Teaches one or more subjects to English as a Second Language students in public schools by performing the following duties.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Instructs students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
  • Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school.
  • Collaborates with mainstream teachers to link ESL and content instruction and provide support to English language learners.
  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.
  • Adapts materials, assignments and assessments to meet the needs of English language learners.
  • Uses differentiated instruction and interventions to meet the needs of English language learners.
  • Administers tests to evaluate pupil progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress.
  • Keeps attendance records.
  • Maintains discipline in classroom.
  • Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
  • Ensures that communications to parents are translated into parents’ home language whenever possible.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Performs related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling student in adjustment and academic problems.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Education from four-year college or university
  • Valid Missouri State Certification in grade level or content area assigned
  • Valid Missouri State Certification in ESL (K-12) or ESL Endorsement 
 
SUCCESS FACTORS
  • Demonstrated experience and/or training in current techniques and skills in teaching English language learners.
  • Teaching experience in urban schools.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Length of work year: 8 hours per day; 5 days/week; 185 work days
