HIGH SCHOOL: LANGUAGE ARTS AND WORLD HISTORY TEACHER


THIS IS A POSITION IN A PRIVATE SCHOOL IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (Saint David School, SANTIAGO). In addition to the monthly salary this position includes a furnished apartment, running costs and return airline ticket between the USA and Dominican Republic, medical insurance and other benefits.

#1: 9TH AND 10TH GRADE TEACHER (language arts and world history)
#2: 11TH AND 12TH GRADE TEACHER (language arts and world history)

  • Language Arts (9th & 10th Grade) American Literature
  • Language Arts (11th & 12th Grade) British Literature
  • World History (9th through 12th Grades) 
  • Current Affairs, Life Skills, University Prep.

As a bilingual school in a small island we purposely introduced World Geography to our students during 5th to 8th grades, as a way for our students to develop a world view.  This program is followed by the High School World History program.  We hope that the skills taught in Junior High and High school prepare young minds to be analytical and knowledgeable about the world today and make connections between current affairs and the major historical events.

Our Language Arts Program & World History courses in High School focus on the following skills:
  • Develop students’ academic language fluency to be able to converse about a variety of topics and research and interpret texts in literature and a wide range of informational content areas.
  •  Develop students’ oral communication skills through classroom discussions, debates and public speaking.
  • Through a variety of mediums (literature and other written texts, visuals, music, videos, cinema) develop critical thinking skills.
  •  Explore the writing process by creating writings for a variety of purposes.

Student-centered methods, differentiated teaching strategies, project based and collaborative learning strategies and assessments work well in our classrooms.  
  • This teacher may collaborate with homeroom teachers and other staff members who work with this age range. Working as a team permits greater one-on-one teaching, and small group work.
  • We only have one group per grade.  Class sizes vary but the majority are between 25-30 students.
  • The teacher should show concern for students’ academic and personal needs, coordinating meetings with other members of staff, the coordinators and parents when necessary.
  • Students participate in a Math, Science, Social Studies and Technology Fair.
  • Students participates in the Reading Marathon.
  • Students participate in artistic and cultural presentations
  • Teachers responsibilities combine two areas of study with two grade levels.  By combining more than one subject area teachers spend more classroom time with each group with the aim of building a closer rapport with the students. 
  • This includes participation with other members of staff in additional courses provided one afternoon each week to students  Present courses include: Theatre, Animation, Graphic Design, Dance, Music Technology, Choir, Visual Arts, Digital Magazine, Life Skills, & SAT Prep.  Courses may change according to the expertise of the different teachers involved.
  • Academic help in the After-school program reinforces individual success.
  •  Teachers may opt to work in other after-school activities (team sports, music & theater groups, ecology group etc.).
