ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER

EARLY LEARNING AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS


THIS IS A POSITION IN A PRIVATE SCHOOL IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (Saint David School, SANTIAGO). In addition to the monthly salary this position includes a furnished apartment, running costs and return airline ticket between the USA and Dominican Republic, medical insurance and other benefits.

#1: RESPONSIBLE FOR TWO GROUPS (WITH CO-TEACHER): KINDERGARTEN & 1ST GRADE
#2: RESPONSIBLE FOR TWO GROUPS (WITH CO-TEACHER): 2ND & 3RD GRADE


We use Co-teaching classrooms through Pre-school and from First to Third Grade. Each co-teaching pair are responsible for two groups of students. Each Early Learning Position: has two teachers working in Spanish in the Dominican Curriculum and two teachers working in the American Curriculum.  Each pair of teachers team-teaches, assisting each other in each of the two classrooms. 

In the American Curriculum at least one of the two teachers is bilingual to facilitate communication with other members of staff and parents.

The students’ day is divided into three blocks of time: 
·      American Curriculum in English: language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science.
·      Dominican Curriculum subjects in Spanish.  Lenguaje, Matemáticas, Sociales y Ciencias Naturales.
·      Complementary Subjects or Specials: Library, Physical Education, Music, Technology, Citizenship, and Art. These subjects are taught by specialized teachers, giving homeroom teachers valuable time to plan and collaborate with other members of staff.
Important information:
  • Working as a team permits greater one-on-one teaching, and small group work.
  • Language Arts and Math are taught daily. Social Studies and Science are not taught simultaneously. Teachers develop a unit in Social Studies in which the students work daily until the project is completed.  Then, they switch to a unit in Science and develop the project daily until it’s completed; finally switching back to Social Studies.  This methodology continues throughout the school year.
  • Progress Reports are shared with students and parents four times a school year.  In June grades are based on each student’s final accomplishments.
  • In his or her role as homeroom teacher the person acts as a mentor for his/her group. The homeroom teacher shows concern for students’ academic and personal needs, coordinating meetings with other members of staff, the coordinators and parents when necessary.
  • Students participate in the Science, Social Studies and Technology Fare
  • Students participates in the Reading Marathon.
  • Students participate in artistic and cultural presentations
  • These positions include Academic help in the After-school program to reinforce individual success.
  • Teachers may opt to work in other after-school activities (team sports, music & theater groups, ecology group etc.) if so desired.
