Head of Department/ Subject Area, Head of Year, Numeracy/ Literacy Supervisor

KLIA is a new international high school in Shanghai with 450 students, led by principal Antony Geralis, a graduate of University College London, University of Cambridge, and King's College London. The high school serves students seeking to a study in the United States or United Kingdom after graduation, and follows the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

The function of the Head/ Supervisor is to take a leading role in the coordination of the Department/ Year/ Area, to allow its smooth, efficient running, and thus maximize student learning outcomes.

To further clarify, please note that:

• All Department/ Year/ Area members are expected to help with the running of the Department in conjunction with the Supervisor/ Head.
• All Department/ Year/ Area members are part of the team, and while coordinating, the Supervisor/ Head will listen to, and respect individual voices. Any issue where the Department/ Year/ Area cannot come to consensus will be referred to the relevant member of the Administration.
• The post is collaborative in nature with more of a mentoring - coaching/ instructional guidance and general subject specific clarifications provision and training focus attached to it and carries
no evaluative function.
The Department/ Year/ Area Supervisor/ Head will be responsible to coordinate, or delegate as deemed appropriate, the following areas:

a) Curriculum & Assessment:
• Be responsible for Department/ Year/ Area whole school curriculum coordination (planning, organization, implementation, evaluation, growth and development, horizontal and vertical
mapping and storing, according to the school and IB respective programme stipulated requirements and provisions.
• Planning, organization, implementation, growth and development of all Department/ Year/ Area related programmes and evaluation of their success through data collection and interpretation for future action.
• Be responsible for assessment procedures and learning outcomes, according to the IB respective programme stipulated requirements and provisions.
• Be responsible for checking, proofreading and editing all subject related information submitted by all Department/ Year/ Area colleagues on all semester report cards and school printed, as well as online publications, according to the instructions of the Administration, as/ if needed, and within the communicated timeline.
b) Administrative Responsibilities:
• Communicate Departmental information to the Administration.
• Be the designated contact to/ from the Administration for Department/ Year/ Area matters.
• Be responsible for sharing institutional knowledge during the orientation of new colleagues, as well as all Department/ Year/ Area members mentoring - coaching/ instructional guidance and general subject specific clarifications provision and training.
• Recruitment of teachers, in consultation with the High School Principal.
• Communication and public relations with other schools, national/ international, professional organizations and the school with regards to the respective subject area.
• Participation in the respective school verification/ authorization, evaluation and accreditation committees and procedures.
c) Departmental Responsibilities:
• Call, prepare agendas, chair Department/ Year/ Area meetings and share and file minutes.
• Take a lead role in managing and solving Department/ Year/ Area issues such as, but not limited to, Departmental/ Year/ Area procedures, disputes, etc. with the aid of the Administration as/ if needed.
• Represent the Department/ Year/ Area in organizations, associations, conferences, meetings, etc. inside and outside the school community.
• Be responsible for making sure that all colleagues are up to date and provide training/ information as/ if needed by designating and/ or designing, coordinating, supervising and evaluating relevant professional development opportunities.
• Supervision of maintenance of facilities, as/ if needed in liaison with the Business Office (Operations Department) and the High School Principal.
• Organization and coordination of events.
• Scheduling and organization of on and off campus activities, tournaments, field trips and travels.
d) Resources & Orders:
• Work with the Administration to coordinate Departmental/ Year/ Area orders/ purchase planning.

• Work with their colleagues to annually update the Departmental/ Year/ Area inventory of resources.
• Be responsible for signing and submitting Department/ Year/ Area expenditure payment/ requisition forms (RFs).
• Distribute resources as needed amongst colleagues.
The Head/ Supervisor of Department/ Year/ Area will be appointed yearly by the High School Principal, with consideration for the individual’s abilities, past and predicted contributions and any other factor deemed important for the effective running of a Department/ Year/ Area. The length of service will vary depending on Department/ Year/ Area needs, but will generally range between 1 - 6 years, in order to share leadership opportunities, yet ensure continuity of desired institutional and subject knowledge.

The Head/ Supervisor of Department/ Year/ Area may choose to delegate some of the tasks above if the Department chooses but will retain the overall responsibility for them.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in the respective subject area (required)
Teaching certificate/ license for the respective subject area (required)
Advanced degree in the respective subject area and/ or Education Administration (preferred)
Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in education (preferred)
Minimum 2 years of relevant administrative experience in education (preferred)
Relevant experience teaching in IB schools (preferred)
IBEN active participation (preferred)
English language competency (oral and written): Native/ near native (for international hires –required), proficient (for national hires - preferred)
Chinese language competency (oral and written): Native/ near native (for national hires –required), proficient (for international hires - preferred)
P. R. China work permit and visa minimum requirements (for international hires – required)
