Combat Care Emergency Medicine Access Research

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. This project will take place as a collaboration between the US Army Institute of Surgical Research and the Brooke Army Medical Center. The USAISR is the Army's premier combat casualty care research laboratory, adjacent to the Army's only level 1 trauma center and largest hospital in the Army. The project will take place in the emergency department.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant in this project will collaborate with military medical staff to optimize access to care within the hospital, ensuring that the right patient is seen at the right place in the optimal time frame. This participant will be a subject matter expert in emergency medicine that can provide expertise in the development of survey instruments and methods for surveying as well as will provide expertise and indirect support to the survey activities. The participant selected for this opportunity must have a background in emergency medicine with residency training and be an actively practicing physician. The participant will learn of challenges in gaining access to care at a military treatment facility, and about the novel system being piloted to direct patients to clinics that can manage their acute issues in a timely fashion.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
