FDA Summer Student Research Opportunity in Biology

A summer student research opportunity is currently available with the Office of Tissues and Advanced Therapies (OTAT), at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.
CBER’s mission is to ensure the safety, purity, potency, and effectiveness of biological products including vaccines, blood and blood products, and cells, tissues, and gene therapies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases, conditions, or injury. Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will have the opportunity to receive training on how the magnitude of integrin expression on human mesenchymal stromal cells influences 1) their proliferative capacity for cell manufacturing and 2) their immunosuppressive capacity as cell-biomaterial combination products. The project will employ a variety of approaches including FACS sorting, Biomaterials engineering, High-resolution imaging, and Molecular biology.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 26, 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for three months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is part-time (20 hours per week) at FDA in the Silver Spring, Maryland, area. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields.
