JOB QUALIFICATIONS: To apply a candidate must have or be eligible to obtain a current Alaska Type C Special Services Certificate issued by the Alaska Department of Education with an endorsement in School Counselor or Guidance and Counseling or equivalent. Must have experience in public education. Must possess clinical skills that directly relate to the knowledge of contemporary adolescent development issues. Must be able to work as a team member and to work cooperatively with all members of the staff and communicate effectively with parents. Good communication skills, problem-solving skills and interpersonal skills required. Must have excellent computer skills and be able to employ district computer programs to post grades and to communicate with parents. Must have a desire to work with secondary students, specifically in grades 9th – 12th in preparing them to become ready for life, college and career.

JOB PURPOSE: The counselor shall provide educational-guidance services to all students. Shall assist each student in the development and understanding of their individual strengths and weaknesses and will assist the students with the opportunities to make realistic assessments concerning their educational, personal and career decisions by utilizing the Alaska Career Information System (AKCIS). Individual and group counseling skills are necessary for implementing responsive, educational and prevention services, including work with students on their Social-Emotional wellbeing. Must be able to use resources such as our district risk assessment tool, OCS reporting, I-Team referral process, and offer outside referral options as needed. Must complete the class registration process with students grades 8-11 and assist in the master schedule building process with administration. Be able to interpret transcripts according to KPBSD policies and requirements. Assist students with successful high school course selections that will lead to attainment of a KPBSD diploma and realistic post-secondary plans. Should have skills in standardized assessment procedures. School does participate in PSAT and AP through the College Board. Be an effective liaison between students and their parents with post-secondary plans, including vocational, military, workforce, and 2or 4-year colleges and universities. Provide information and opportunities to interested students. Organize teacher parent meetings for students as needed. Will work as an integral member of a counseling/school team and be responsible to the building administrator. Will assistin student transitions to high school. Will assist in student transitions to high school. Other duties as assigned.
