Senior Health Physicist

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a senior health physicist for our Idaho Falls Regional Office. This position performs key functions for the radiological monitoring component of the Idaho National Laboratories (INL) Oversight Program and is responsible for verifying radiological data for reporting requirements.
Example of Duties:
- Required to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy (DOE) "L" clearance.
- Coordinates work assignments for the health physics group in conjunction with the INL oversight program manager.
- Review, evaluate, and comment on federal documents from DOE, US Environmental Protection Agency, and others as identified.
- Provides comments on hazard assessments and radiological environmental studies and reports on potential adverse impacts from proposed and existing DOE activities in Idaho.
- Supports the Emergency Planning and Preparedness component of the Oversight Program and associated plans.
- Provides oversight and improvement recommendations for the maintenance, installation, and repair of air sampling equipment, oversight community monitoring stations, pressurized ion chamber polling equipment, and other radiation measurement equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a Bachelor's degree in the physical or biological sciences, or a related field;
AND
At least six years of professional experience designing and implementing scientific applications, investigations, studies such as chemical, physical, or biological monitoring, corrective action plans, analysis, and assessment. OR Possession of a Master's degree in the sciences or related field; AND four years' experience as defined above; OR Possession of a Doctor of Philosophy in the sciences or related field; AND two years' experience as defined above.
Specialty Minimum Qualifications (required for this position):
- DEQ 5642 - Health/Radiation Physics: Considerable knowledge of health or radiation physics typically gained through possession of a college degree in Physics, Health Physics, Geophysics, Environmental Science, Nuclear, Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field; OR education and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree which includes successful completion of two (2) upper-division health or radiation physics college courses; AND at least two (2) years of experience performing radiation dose assessments, radiological controls, environmental monitoring for radionuclides, and radiological regulatory analysis and interpretation.

- Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time
- Ability to reach and bend for filing purposes
- Some periods of heavy reading and typing required
- Ability to lift 30 pounds when working with file boxes
- Some travel may be required
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds over rough terrain
- Ability to work in adverse or inclement weather
- May come into contact with hazardous waste/materials
- Eyesight needs to be 20/20 (as corrected) to observe field compliance
- Required to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" Clearance, including successfully passing a drug screening test and subject to random drug screening tests
